quite a difference today. if you're going to the ravens game, you picked a good one. it's 48 degrees right now, significantly warmer than it was yesterday at this time. as we go into the afternoon, wind will pick up out of the southwest. a mix of sun and clouds, high temperatures a range between 69 and 74 degrees. rain possible to start the week tomorrow. we will talk about that in a few minutes. stay with us. >> looking at the news making headlines this morning. a man has died and another recovering after a shooting after a house apart in anne arundel county around 1:30 on saturday morning in the 7000 block of outing avenue in pasadena. police say two men were taken to the hospital where morrow died. a shooting in north baltimore is a homicide investigation.

investigators say officers found 18-year-old tash wanna jones lying in the 300 block of east 75th, suffering from a gunshot to the head. there is no word on what sparked that violence and the shooter is at large. a female cab driver is in serious condition after a shooting in west baltimore around 3:30 saturday morning. we are told the victim picked up the suspects and took them to the 3100 block of swann drive near druid hill park where, according to police, the driver was shot in the chest. detectives are investigating the incident as a possible robbery and police in baltimore county are looking for a suspect after a shooting in lands down. a man was shot just before midnight in the 3800 block of mcdowell lane on friday. he later died at shock trauma. police have released no motive

for the case. another marylander has been with fungal meningitis from a contaminated steroid injection. far, 198 people in 13 states have gotten sick and 15 have died, including one person right here in maryland. the latest round in the battle between baltimore comptroller joan pratt and mayor stephanie rawlings-blake has pratt suing the mayor to block the new phone system. speaking to the "baltimore sun," officials from the mayor's office say the disagreement is wasteful. >> more than 27,000 runner from 24 countries met the challenge of the tough course at the

baltimore running festival. stephen muange shaved two of his running time from last year. meanwhile, tesfaye -- accordingo officials, both will take home a prize of $25,000. >> the elite runner were already at mile 16. no matter how many times you've seen them run, you are always amazed at how fast someone could for 26 miles. it's amazing. i've done this marathon in 2006 and i died at the end. i can't imagine how these folks are going that fast. >> it's just amazing. >> after the elite runners came the rest of the athletes, folks

trapped in her vehicle. police in l.a. were chasing two people in a black vehicle when it crashed into an s.u.v. firefighters had to free the woman who was trapped. they say as many as five people hurt in then pursuit. actor, television host and master of ceremonies for the miss america pageant, gary collins, died of natural causes early saturday after he was brought to the hospital. a recurring guest on "the love boat" and "fantasy island," he also hosted the "miss america pageant." he was 74. >> a weekend of celebrations in los angeles in honor of the space shuttle endeavour. on saturday, it parked day two of the shuttle's journey through the streets of los angeles en route to the california science center where it will go on display later this month. >> thousands of excited fans

low 70's downtown, partly cloudy skies, breeze at 12 miles per hour but a nice day for football in baltimore this afternoon. let me start in the tropics, it's still tropical season. tropical season doesn't end in the tail end of november and we have a tropical storm east of puerto rico, tropical storm rafael, sustained winds 50 miles per hour. it will travel northbound and maybe affect bermuda but stay offshore of the east coast of the united states and pick up waves at ocean city. that's about it. the weather maps at home, we have high pressure in control of the weather in the mid atlantic region. that should keep things dry today and we have a storm system in the midwest. in between the two, the surface winds will turn southwest and push us into the 70's this afternoon so we are looking forward to that. a lot of activity around us with rain to the north and west and that will catch up to us during the day tomorrow. 49 in taneytown, 50 in parkton

it appears the buck stopped at central office where school officials failed to keep track of overtime and overpayments to employee. in one case, an employee was given a $57,000 annual leave payment twice. there were similar concerns raised about overtime. thomas barnacle is the state's acting legislative auditor. >> we found a number of discrepancies where the payments made couldn't be supported by the record and on top of that the supervisors couldn't explain why this were discrepancies. >> the state audit revealed the school system has done a poor job of debt collection. it found that as of may of last year, the district was owed for more than $4 million for accounts past due over 60 days. >> they have to establish better collection policies to make sure amounts owed are paid, especially as it relates to employees that haven't fulfilled work commitments. >> the audit shows the city's

school system couldn't account for more than 12,000 computers including 32 laptops. the audit criticized the district for wasting millions of dollars on underused school buildings. officials took heat for failing to track transportation costs. the city school c.e.o. responded to the findings in a letter to school employees. he said, we take the audit seriously ands welcome them in the same way we welcome the many internal and external audits conducted each year on city schools. the mayor believes the damaging report may hamper the city's efforts to get funding next year. >> losing funding would be a major concern for city schools, already strapped for cash. that's more in the state audit. you can see it on the education page of our website, wbaltv.com.

looking at news making headlines this morning. a man has died and another recovering after a shooting outside of a house party in anne arundel county around one on 1:0 a.m. in the 700 block of south pasadena. we are told the unidentified man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. >> a shooting in north baltimore is a homicide investigation. investigators say officers found 18-year-old tashawna jones lying in the 300 block of east 26th street suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. she has died from her injuries. the shooter is still at large. a female cab driver in serious condition after a shooting in west baltimore around 3:30 a.m. saturday. are told the victim picked up the suspects, a male and two females, and took them to the 3100 block of swann drive when, according to police, the driver

was shot in the chest. detectives are investigating the incident as a possible robbery and the search continues for the suspects. and police in baltimore county are looking for a suspect after a shooting in lansdowne. they say a man was shot just before midnight in the 3800 block of mcdonald lane friday night. he died at shock trauma. >> another marylander has been diagnosed with fungal meningitis from a contaminated steroid injection and that raises the number of cases identified in maryland to 15. so far, 198 people in 13 states gotten sick, 15 have died, including one person in maryland. the latest round in the battle between baltimore comptroller joan pratt and mayor stephen stephanie rawlings-blake has pratt accusing the mayor of subconverting the competitive bidding process. speaking to the "baltimore sun,"

officials call the lawsuit wasteful. >> the 12th annual baltimore running festival is in the record books. more than 27,000 runners from 50 states and 24 countries met the a tough course. in the end, 31-year-old stephen muange of kenya blocked in at just over 2:13 to capture first place on the men's side. the two-time winner shaved two minutes off his winning time last year. yado ofold elfneshe ethiopia edged out the second-place finisher in the field literally by an inch and according to race officials, both will take home top prize of $25,000. 11 news reporter rob roblin has more. >> 1:25 into the race and elite runners were already at mile 16. you are always amazed at how fast someone could run for 26

modern life. the top rising searches on google during the vice presidential debate were biden, mularky and who's winning the debate. search engines can raise eyebrows. when i type "completely wrong" into the google images search, i get pictures of mitt romney. google says the gallery was unintentional. it's algorithm picked up on news coverage of romney's own description of his 47% remark. we saw a similar trend on bing and yahoo. >> a search engine relies on words around an image. if you put a picture of mitt romney around word "completely wrong." >> these are called google bomb. in the mid 2000's, pranksters created a link with the word

on wednesday at the funeral home located on york road. a funeral service will be at 11:00. city fire officials say they'll canvass the entire city of baltimore engaging with citizens and installing smoke alarms wherever needed. the baltimore blast kicks off goals for daniel program. a four-hour soccer marathon held saturday to help cover medical expenses for 17-year-old daniel bowory who was injured during a shooting at perry hall high school on the first day of school. the fund raiser featured six-on-six soccer games between blast players and members of the allied sports program. >> the community support today was unbelievable. people were making the trek from games they play regularly

the state awarded caesar's entertainment group a license over the summer and it will operate a casino south of m&t bank stadium under the harrah's name. there's no definitive ground breaking time table. it's seeking changes for the plan in traffic control and even suggested changes in building materials. executives told the baltimore business journal the casino wants to partner with restaurants. >> if question 7 passes, my company will bring table games right here to baltimore. >> passage of 7 will allow table games at all licensed casinos in maryland. >> a $25 million investment that will create 500 new jobs right here. >> caesars entertainment says

that figure represents not only implementing table games but adding restaurants, as well. the 500 jobs suggest that is harrah's plans to offer between 125 and 130 table games including poker. according to the department of legislative services, each table game supports 3.5 jobs. harrah's offers employees medical and dental benefits. table related jobs include gaming dealers who earn $25,000. pit clerks bringing in $35,000 and a supervisor's salary ranges from $43,000 to $70,000. casino information is proprietary. public record indicate that 30% of dover downs patrons come from maryland and 30% to 37% of marylander guess to the hollywood casino in west virginia. >> according to the latest filings, close to $36 million has been spent on trying to sway public opinion on referendum

the beautiful weather as we close the weekend today. we will check the second seven-y forecast in a few minutes. >> news making headlines this morning. a man has died and another recovering after a shooting outside a house party in anne arundel county. we are told the unidentified man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. detectives say they believe the victims were targeted. >> a shooting in north baltimore is a homicide investigation. investigators say officers found 18-year-old tashawna jones lying in the 300 block of east 26th street around 7:00 p.m. friday night. suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. she has died from her injuries. there's no word on what sparked that violence. the shooter is still at large. a female cab driver in serious condition after a shooting in west baltimore around 3:30 a.m. saturday.

we are told the victim picked up the suspects, a male and two females, and took them to the 3100 block of swann drive when, according to police, the driver was shot in the chest. detectives are investigating the incident as a possible robbery and the search continues for the suspects. and police in baltimore county are looking for a suspect after a shooting in lansdowne. they say a man was shot just before midnight in the 3800 block of mcdowell lane friday. he died at shock trauma. >> another marylander has been diagnosed with fungal meningitis from a contaminated steroid injection and that raises the number of cases identified in maryland to 15. so far, 198 people in 13 states have gotten sick, 15 have died, including one person in maryland. the latest round in the battle between baltimore comptroller joan pratt and mayor stephen stephanie rawlings-blake has pratt suing the mayor's office to block the installation of a

new phone system. this is a battle that's been going on since june when the comptroller accused of mayor of subverting a competitive bidding process. officials call the lawsuit wasteful. >> the 12th annual baltimore running festival is in the record books. more than 27,000 runners from 50 states and 24 countries met the challenge of a tough course. in the end, 31-year-old stephen muange of kenya clocked in at just over 2:13 to capture first place on the men's side. he won last year. the two-time winner shaved two minutes off his winning time last year. 25-year-old elfneshe yado of ethiopia edged out the second-place finisher in the women's field literally by an inch and according to race officials, they say it was very tight. both the top men's winner and female winner will take home the

top prize of $25,000. 11 news reporter rob roblin has more. >> 1:25 into the race and elite runners were already at mile 16. no matter how many times you've seen them run, you you are always amazed at how fast someone could run for 26 miles. >> it's amazing. i've done this marathon in 2006 and i died at the end. i can't imagine what these folks are going through that face. >> i wish i were like them. they're just amazing and i'm glad i was able to see them. >> after the elite runners came the rest of the athletes. these are folks like you and i, our neighbors. the marathon is like no other sporting event. just to run a marathon is quite an accomplishment. all along the 26 miles, fans were cheering and encouraging the runners.

than yesterday. yesterday we had frost and freeze advisories in effect and today we are in the 40's and 50's. it will be a mild afternoon. if you're lucky enough to have tickets for the ravens game, you picked a good one. forecast for kickoff time 1:00, temperatures in the upper 60's, low 70's at that time. breeze coming out of the southwest at 12, partly cloudy skies. want to the start down in the tropics. not unusual to have a tropical storm on the map in the middle of october but we are winding down the tropical season. the 17th named storm of the season, rafael, sustained winds 50 miles per hour to the east of puerto rico. it will stay away from the east the united states but may affect bermuda, moving north over the next few days. so if you have travel plans to bermuda early next week, pay attention to this storm but it should stay far enough offshore, it doesn't bother delmarva beaches. closer to home on the weather maps, high pressure in control right now, always good news but

there's a lot of active west and north of us with a storm system out of the midwest producing showers and maybe a few thunderstorms for us to start the work week. the rain's pretty close. light showers in northern back up into new york state, heavier rain across the mississippi valley around st. louis. this is heading our direction so rain showers likely by tomorrow but not today. 46 in columbia, same thing in randallstown, 49 in and 50 degrees at the top of the hour in rising sun and cecil county. a mix of sun and clouds, unseasonaly mild, average high is 67. we will make it into the low 70's this afternoon and sun rising in a couple of minutes, 7:16, if you're going to take out the boat, the winds will pick up this afternoon out of the southwest 10 to 20 knots, wave heights one to two feet and next high tide at 6:30.

>> welcome back, time for this morning's medical alert. i'm here with dr. laura gormley from the catson eye group. we are going to talk about eye injuries. what are the types of things that can hurt your eyes? >> a lot of things around the house are a potential for eye injuries. there are obvious ones, working with home repairs, power tools,

but even cleaning, working with chemicals and cooking, you can splash hot oil in your eyes. >> sporting events. >> people always think about it when the players are on the field but nots in -- necessary he in the neighborhood. >> how can you recognize you've been injured, other than the obvious? >> usually if there's a serious injury you'll feel something happen to your eye. sometimes you can see it. looks like there's something in your eye, your eye can get red, you can have bruising around the area, all of those things. >> one eye could stick out further than the other, the actually eyeball would be puffy? >> depending where you have swelling, you can have swelling behind the eye itself which can lead to one eye pushing forward. >> broken blood vernon vernon vt a sign? >> if you've been doing home repair and you feel something

might be in the eye and you get red areas, call your eye doctor. >> watering, blurry? >> certainly. >> how do you prevent eye injuries? best thing, safety glasses. make sure you put them on when you're doing any home repairs, working with power tools, even sporting events but regular glass you can have safety standard lens material so they will work as a safety glass, give you a little bit of safety for the around-the-house activities. >> what about sunglasses? >> they can be good for safety glasses if you have them made of a safety standard material like polycarbonate. >> we are at a time of the year where the sun is at a funky angle and it's really bright. how important is it to protect your eyes driving and walking around with sunglasses? >> for important. the more protection you have from u.v., the better.

driving, you're usually ok because the windshield will block u.v. but if you're getting sunglasses, make sure they're 100% u.v. protection. >> you want to avoid people coming to your office with eye problems. >> i certainly do. >> really good information. stay with us. more news ahead on 11 news morning.

in the candy melter. we wanted to show for football, we have football helmet and football pops so you can make them with your favorite colors. >> you're just buying the chocolate or the candy and you have a mold. >> all you do is pour it in and use the pops. you can do these, put them in the refrigerator and they firm up in 15 minutes and you're good to go and we have all different colors so you can get them ravens colors, a lot of different things, caramel. we have other home decor items. >> i love this. >> this is a premade wreath so you buy the wreath and add the deco mesh ribbon and bows and tie it on with chenille bows. we have these glass blocks which are fun and these little gourds over here, they come in bags. i spray painted them with spraypaint and it's a copper,

start and early next week rain showers will be likely. we will check the seven-day forecast when we return. >> time now for a look at what's coming up on "meet the press" and david gregory joining us live from washington, d.c. with a preview. good morning, david. >> good morning, jennifer. >> the vice presidential debate has come and gone. there was a sense that vice president biden needed a good performance. do you think he did? >> he dominated the debate. there are a lot of people working that out depending on where they sit. he was over the top with laughing and interrupting and sighing and what-not. a lot of supporters felt that was the performance they needed out of him and the aggressiveness they wanted to see from the president. others found it rude or condescending. i think both sides accomplished what they wanted out of that debate and the stage is set for tuesday which is important to see how the president handles it, whether romney can colt --

consolidate what he started to build. >> what is the prep work going into tuesday's debate. the president needs a strong performance. >> there's universal opinion about that and agreement about that. it's striking that the president, we haven't seen him much in the past five days. i think he's studying very hard. he needs to show he's a different kind of debater with more command and it's not just style here. i think substantively, he needs to go to work on what his agenda would look like in a second term and taking down some of the arguments on the romney side. if there's been a consistent strategy from the obama campaign which is to disqualify romney. >> you're going to have steven colbert on your show today and he should have an interesting take on all of this. >> he does. we talked to him in character and out of character.

hold services for the grandmother and children who perished in that blaze. a wake will take place at 10:00 a.m. thursday at mount pleasant church and ministries on radeky avenue. a funeral service will follow at 11:00. city fire officials will canvass the city of baltimore today by walking through local communities, engaging with citizens and installing smoke alarms wherever needed. the baltimore blast kicked off goals for daniel program. players, student and members of the perry hall community participated in the four-hour soccer marathon saturday to help cover medical expenses for 17-year-old daniel bowory. daniel was injured during a shooting at perry hall high on the first day of school. the fundraiser featured six-on-six soccer game between blast players and members of the allied sports program.

believe in themselves. they have a weak belief in themselves and self-esteem is diminished. by the time they hit ninth grade, they're pretty convinced school has nothing to offer them and they have no chance of success. insanity runs through my family but i chose to work with that population. i understand how it feels to not be the first one to get it, especially in math. >> i'll raise my hand along with you. >> i was in the do-do birds group in math so i have a lot of empathy and i like kid and i think they're funny and i have never believed it was time to give up on a kid. that's never okiment these are really strategies to help teachers and parents figure out the best way to reach that child. >> exactly. this book is a history of the things i've learned both theoretically through my

academic work and very practically from my work for 46 years as a teacher and there are strategies, harriet's helpful hints. >> i think this is good for a parent, period, how to reach your child when they're just not getting it. >> right. and one of the clues is that you always use praise to hold a child's strength. i see how hard you're working, it seems to me you're putting forth a lot of effort, let's figure out where the road block is together. if you say to your child or your student, we are in this together, it's not just you, it's my job to teach you and your job to be here with me and we can make it happen, that changes the dynamics incredibly. you also say be creative. >> yes. >> so it's not so boring. have a youngster who never sat in a chair during middle school so i gave him a watering

as a pastor, my support for question 6 is rooted in my belief that the government should treat everyone equally. i wouldn't want someone denying my rights based upon their religious views, so i shouldn't deny others based upon mine. it's about fairness. i support this law because it doesn't force any church to perform a same sex marriage if it's against their beliefs. and that's what this is about. protecting religious freedom and all marylanders equally under the law.
